Starting from the definition of application networking requirements and taking into account the main attributes of the access networks available at user premises, as well as their connections to the infrastructure resources, the main goal of this activity was to investigate and define the features of the network infrastructure, in relation to QoS provisioning and the characteristics necessary to support a new form of cooperative and distributed utilization of resources, such as computing facilities and unique advanced instruments.
In order to deploy and operate a persistent, production quality infrastructure for distributed instrument monitoring and control, as well as storing and processing results from instrument-enabled experiments, we have integrated a production grid of instrumentation services with GEANT2. GEANT2 is the European high-speed academic IP network, connecting 30 National Research and Education Networks (NRENs) in 34 European countries. It is connected to counterpart regional networks in North America, Latin America and Asia-Pacific and uses the most up-to-date optical and routing technologies.
